Materials and waste management

Waste management following procedures for handling, separation, labeling, storage, transport and disposal of industrial waste.

Our waste management is performed as established in corporate procedures for handling, separation, labeling, temporary storage, transportation, conditioning and final disposal of waste.

The waste generating areas are responsible for managing all these previous stages and also for transporting the waste to the Company’s Advanced Distribution Centre. When received at this facility, the waste is temporarily stored, and separated for disposal and final destination. Throughout the industrial waste management process, compliance with environmental legislation is checked and controlled.

Among the waste destined in 2019, 78,500 tons were classified as non-hazardous, according to Brazilian Technical Standard NBR 10004/2004, and sent for recycling and reuse, representing 98.7% of Cemig’s total waste.

Regarding hazardous waste, in 2019 we correctly disposed of 1,064 tons, of which 111.15 tons were co-processed or incinerated and 34.53 tons were sent for disposal and recycling. Of this total, 132 L of insulating mineral oil were regenerated and used, taken from electrical equipment.

The residues forwarded for co-processing comprise 110.19 tons of impregnated residues with oil (gloves, tow and sawdust) and 960 kg for incineration. 7.7tons of lamps and lamp caps were sent for decontamination and recycling.
